Progressiveness

In a constantly changing world

Αποδεχόμενοι αυτήν την δυσάρεστη διαπίστωση, πώς θα μπορούσαμε να προσεγγίσουμε και να ορίσουμε το περιεχόμενο των επιδιώξεων της προοδευτικότητας;

On a progressive movement for social change

What is a progressive movement for social change aiming to?
To impose an ideal society model? Maybe an ideal model of man? To overthrow the capitalists? To abolish the police? To give money to everybody?

How can a progressive movement for social change be achieving its goals?
By continuous confrontation with the police? By sabotaging the state function and the means of production? By military confrontation?

The goals of a progressive movement for social change can be described in the context of the goal of a peaceful world in which people live in dignity. Obstacle to the formation of such a world is not only capitalism by itself, but, even more, the dominance of behaviors and conceptions suggesting that humanity, people and societies, have no other choice but to evolve inside a never ending cycle of antagonism and growth. Capitalism, constitutes the most recent stage of a historic process which, in its total, is defined by the dominance of these specific behaviors and conceptions.

Therefore, what a progressive movement needs to overthrow isn't simply capitalism, but instead the behaviors-conceptions that maintain the cycle of antagonism and growth. These behaviors-conceptions are in constant movement from the persons to the society and vice versa, defining a collective imagination that feeds itself from the illusion of a steady course towards the "more" and the "better". This illusion is sustained by those who, for mainly accidental reasons, are not among those becoming prey in the struggle for growth and dominance. Also, this illusion directs those who sustain and reproduce it, to exclude from the frame of the reality all those who become marginalized and excluded from any mean of well being, those who are destroyed in "peripheral" wars in distant countries, those producing necessary or "necessary" products under slavery conditions in distant or near places, and so on.

The most important result coming from the cycle of antagonism and growth is the analgesia, the invalidation of the crucial for the human state idiom of empathy, the immanent interest for the condition of the co-human. At the same time, the cycle of antagonism and growth promotes to a crucial factor, the beliefs of exceptionalism and superiority of anyone who, for whatever reason, remains active in this cycle, opposite to all those seeing their lives becoming limited or totally destructed.

Therefore, a progressive movement for social change carries the responsibility to look for ways in order to achieve:
- the interruption of the cycle of antagonism-growth,
- the promotion of empathy as an important regulator for human relations,
- the depreciation of the mechanisms that import on the personal and social field any financial, national, cultural, religion, scientific, ideological, guild "superiority" as guides to social classification.
These three points along with the text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights may constitute the best compass for a progressive movement for social change.

> How can a progressive movement for social change approach its goals?

We know that growth and enforcement constitute the necessary preconditions for the survival of any antagonistic-dominant system. Similarly, we know that the achievement of growth and the gaining of strength may turn, in almost an automatic way, any social environment to being antagonistic, starting the cycle of antagonism-growth. We also know that growth and enforcement can be supported most successfully only inside systems of centralized economy and commanding. In a few words, antagonism and centralization go hand by hand. Thus, we can easily conclude that centralization forms, maintains and strengthens authorities that consistently work, with any means available, for their self-preservation; along with the preservation of the antagonistic environment that themselves form and which is usually the one responsible for their extinction: destruction is always the peak in this sequence of aspirations.

We have all the needed facts to compose the critical knowledge regarding our origins as humans, and this knowledge suggests in a few words: Humanity during the distant past achieved progress by limiting, consciously, the destruction that antagonism brings. It shouldn't be paradox to place the beginning of humanity and human civilization at this very exact moment. Reason, cooperation and creativity stand through out the whole of humanity opposite to antagonism, growth and destruction.

Contrary to the most common teachings, the "golden" period of humanity hasn't been the 50 years of the Athens "Democracy"[1] but instead the, by far, longer period of the free Prometheus[2] during which villages didn't need fortifications, there was no central authority, while at the same time products, knowledge and technologies were shared from the Caspian to the Mediterranean and the European river networks.

We became humans while trying to invalidate the destruction that antagonism brings. And we achieved this every time we used reason to collaborate in equality for a cause: to not allow the concentration of any form of power in the hands of persons and groups. Most of the laws-taboos of the primitive societies show exactly this effort: to eliminate the possibility of concentration of wealth, power, and any kind of lasting authority inside the community.

Considering that our world moves around antagonism, growth, centralization, authority and destruction, it is easy to recognize the starting points for a progressive movement for social change: cooperation, size decreasing, decentralization, diversity, collectivity and creativity.

The security of the existing system is based on the perception imposed by itself, [3] that, each person should exist by successfully competing all other persons. The existing system teaches that, we become successful when we manage to impose our will upon other people, similarly to what elephant seals do, but with only difference that instead of growing our mass we should grow our extracorporeal supplies. By invalidating this perception in real, the system will be left without its most effective ideological foundation.

> What is change?

We have consolidated that we shouldn't be considering as change the switching from one system of dominance based on financial superiority, to another based on ideological, religious, military or any other superiority. Thus, any attempt to overthrow the financial dominance, should prior have securely embedd that it will not end up to the establishment of another kind of dominance.
It is important to refer specifically to a progressive social change and not in general to the overthrowing of the existing system, and therefore, in this context, we need to be looking both for the meaning of progress and the meaning of change.
The meaning of progress for the people and our societies could be described as, our ability to converse on what is good and what is fair, while putting effort so that the in-between-us relations are formed in the manner we choose.

It is most unlikely for a change to occur towards the direction of good and fair coming from physical inevitability. Such expectations corresponding to elephant seals should not refer to humans who may understand the consequences of the one or the other choice, and cooperate for the achievement of the one or the other cause. We can not expect for the 19 elephant seals that have been blocked from reproduction to cooperate in order to change minds to the one dominant seal for the mistreatment he imposes on them. Neither we can expect from these beings to cooperate in order to violently overthrow their oppressor and establish between them a fair social system. Unfortunately for the elephant seals, only a physical causality could cancel the misery that a few put on all the rest. For us people though, the research for the more fair, along with the cooperation for its achievement, constitute actions that when we do not develop, even our substance as humans may be put under question.

The demand however for justice, is mostly limited to the personal living conditions having as criterion people gaining more than we do, while being indifferent for the condition of those who gain less or even nothing at all.
This self-interested justice id expressed in a paradox way:
The interest of most people is exhausted in the direction of the expansion of the wealth that each one can obtain privately having as criterion those who have more, and doesn't extend towards the direction of a fair sharing between the sum of the people.

The daily antagonistic routine supported by the dominant teachings lead people to conceive the social environment and oneself more like an elephant seal than a human being. In the system's terminology, the social injustice we cause is attributed to us as success. Antagonism and the pursuit for success, become for every human the tangible goal from which if one deviate, one knows of the danger of being marginalized similarly to one of the 19 weak elephant seals. The meaning of justice, in this context, even in its most sensitive expression, is far away from including the sum of a community, and even more of the world.
Thus, besides excluding from the frame of social well-being the next-door people who have "failed", we do the same for the workers-slaves of the "developing" world who produce for us most of the products we consume. In both cases we show tremendous lack of thoughtfulness and great amount of analgesia.

Progress, as antagonism and growth, and success, as analgesia and inhumanity, are constantly presented around us teaching and urging us to reproduce a deeply inhumane social system. There isn't any chance however for any kind of progress to occur, if it doesn't come as a product of choices made consciously by people in their effort to approach good and fair.

> Which are the available means to a progressive movement for social change?

In order to answer this question it would be useful to define progress as the result of our choices driven by the use of reason in the research of good and fair, while defining regression as the result of our choices driven by irrational impulsion.
Every human and every society struggles inside the contradiction created by the human substance, reason opposite to impulsion, good opposite to easy, fair opposite to available.
It would also be useful to keep in mind that this struggle will never end to a final conclusion, and that it wouldn't be possible to occur in one way, one method or with the presumption that our goals are being best served by specific actions chosen by specific people and not by other actions chosen for the same reason by other people.

Therefore, we could define as progressive social change the moment that the struggle of every human and every society will start taking place, at the most, inside a context ruled by the reason of people, putting aside the existing context that promotes and legalize,s as a starting point for every effort, the leading-to-a-dead-end impulsion maintaining and being maintained by the ruling system of antagonism-growth.

It becomes this way obvious that, for every human and every community working for a progressive social change, the goal is the same as the mean, since the mean actually constitutes the goal in this endless effort.

By the time we accept that the mean constitutes the goal, it would be a paradox for a movement for the progressive social change to allege that "the end justifies the means" excusing this way any choices and any actions.

> Could there be then some authority that would relieve people from the sufferings that authority brings to them? Or, could there be some violence that would abolish violence?

Some, after having entitled themselves to the privilege of authority and violence, claim that, yes, there can be authority and violence for the benefit of the most. In their imagination, they are the most capable ones to run the State in order to practice these privileges in an ideal way, introducing a centralization for a good cause an a violence with kind intentions.
No matter how hard it is, we need to train ourselves in order to become able to recognize that such overestimated beliefs are perfectly built in the system where each man and each group of people become forced to compete and magnify infinitely; regardless to whether the means for this cause are sometimes the means of production or, in other occasions, idealistic ideologies and superstitions.

There is no doubt that, a progressive change can be succeeded by the weakening of the authority, the weakening of violence and the weakening of the centralized State, which was meant to be the ideal carrier of any growing authority and any growing violence. Authority and violence, nevertheless, might occur anywhere, even outside the context of a centralized State and this should be well known to all of the people.

Legislators in modern societies have long forgotten the foundations of the rules of the primitive societies according to which, for every thing that all would wish to obtain but they shouldn't, since the pursuit of acquisition will bring antagonism and destruction, the society defines limits so that finally no one shall obtain it. The simplicity and the effectiveness of the application of such restrictions in the small numbered primitive societies wouldn't be possible to apply to the numerous populated societies that, meanwhile, have occurred by the need of the authorities to strengthen through growth and in which are formed castes of representatives and bureaucratic organizations with instincts and reflections of self-preservation.
It isn't, however, the great number of people that chain modern societies to the system of antagonism-growth but two more worrying causes:
- the establishment of the belief that not all people are entitled to an equal level of well being, and,
- the establishment of a state protector of the dominants, that constantly upgrades its capabilities in order to keep the dominants safe from the destruction they cause around them, treating all other humans as disposable herds.

> Which is anyway this progressive movement for social change and when is it going to make its presence noticeable?

This movement sometimes exists as flares of thought, while other times as behaviors and actions coming from people and movements since thousands of years; doubtless ever since a man was enslaved for the first time. It would be desirable, for this movement to make its presence decisive before the teachings of arrogance along with irrational impulses destroy everything beautiful in the world and everything good that people have made or that are capable of making.

The value of human life

- Can we reject as anti-human the classification of human life to worthy and unworthy?
- Can we reject as anti-human the idea that, for granted there are people succeeding and others failing and that, those failing are guilty and responsible for their incapability towards the demands of life?
- Can we search, reveal and reject any expressions of "success" aiming to dominance through the depreciation of other people?
- Can we control our need to feel important in a manner that doesn't include dominance upon others?
- Can we, in any action of imposition and dominance, recognize our hideous and anti-human self?
- Can we not recognize any man as authority in matters regarding our existence and co-existence?
- Can we recognize in every human being marginalized by the mechanisms of the "successful" ones the right to revolt in order to void the unfairness and to regain the coequal human substance?

At the same time,
- Can we not participate in any growth intended to maintaining authorities?
- Can we question and void anything that can turn to a tool of authority in the hands of the strong?
- Can we redefine the meaning and the use of property?
- Can we protect every human being from its transformation to useful equipment, production number or monetary measure?
- Can we turn our back to everything that limits the perspective of a humane life for today's generations and the generations to come?

We doubtlessly can and, in any case, there are always people trying this in, sometimes, more and, sometimes, less effective manners. What is important though, is that for the application of the most of these, is needed a personal and collective effort in the context of culture. Meaning, there is needed a new narrative both for the meaning of well being and the meaning of social bonding, which will void the narratives of private well being, of the monetary-quantitative growth, of hierarchy and enforcement.

The importance of synthesis and diversity

Authoritarian formations have failed since, besides being easily corrupted by various authorities,[4] they reproduce accurately the structure of the system that we want to free ourselves from.
Ideological formations on the other hand, fail constantly and this is reasonable since, every ideology is a product of the knowledge and the perceptions of a specific era. Any established view of the world, within a minimum of the historic time becomes outdated.

The most important issue though, regarding both authoritarian and ideological formations in general, is that the solutions proposed by each one of these formations are antagonistic to the proposals stated by all the other. In a few words the core of each such formation, consists of the same substances as the culture of antagonism, growth and enforcement.
In his book The perfect State: The night of the reptiles, Andreas Georgiou refers to the "ideal" peak of social formation, in a system where everything will be calculated to the last detail, either for the benefit of few or in the name of the most, as the humanity's worst nightmare.

In a few words, there is no ideological formation on which we should concede the "salvation" of humanity because instantly, even if -by a miracle- such a magnificent plan becomes real, humanity will be trapped inside an extreme and catastrophic dead end.

On the other hand, anything that can react, composing itself and its environment, along with recomposing itself constantly, producing innovation and diversity, starting from behavior, to production of goods, and to theory formulation, and all this with respect and love towards the uniqueness of each human being, curing to search for the good and the fair, constitutes the fire fly, the torch or the star that lightens for the people a humane path.

A N N E X   Ι
A fictional community

If we imagined ourselves inside a small-numbered and magically self-sufficient community, let's say of about 30 persons, that would all have to work, what would be the rules of co-existence and administration?
- Would we choose to pair in free will and equally, or some would have special privileges?
- Would we choose for some to have greater access to goods?
- Αν ένας ήταν τυφλός θα τον εξαπατούσαμε σε κάθε ευκαιρία;
- If a blind person was among us, would we cheat on him in every possible occasion?
- If one was mentally disabled would we share equally the time needed for his care?
- Would we grant special privileges to the physician and the judge opposite to the stonemason and the baker?
- Would we allow to one of us to concentrate privileges in order to use it to impose his will upon the rest of us?
- Would we expect from the farm-worker to work more and for more years than the teacher?
- Would we choose someone for mayor?
- Would we expect from all to become mayors, or we would consider that, let's say, the builder or the farm worker aren't qualified for this?
- Would we approve of any expression of the individual personality? Let's say, what if this individual personality was expressed through being dominant? If it was expressed through the concentration of wealth? If it was expressed through secret attempts to form dark networks serving the interests of a small group in the community?

Then lets wonder:
What is restricting us from forming our societies in the way that we would form social relations in a small numbered environment of familiar persons?

A N N E X   Ι Ι
Starting points for the constitutional declaration of a progressive movement for social change

- We the people choose that all the people, regardless the differences in the look, the personality, the abilities, the origins and everything that might differentiate us, we are equal between us and the life of each one has the exact same value as of everybody else.
- We the people choose that every person can and should contribute for the survivor and the well-being of his own and of all of the people, depending on his abilities and his interests. Accordingly, we choose that every man should be in position to become, in an equal manner, receiver of the other peoples contribution to the common well-being.
- We the people choose to see in every natural good, like the land, the water, and the air, every human creation and every knowledge, as a public domain available to all people and all future generations, which by no-means anyone might privatize in order to turn it against other people and future generations.
- We the people choose to encourage and reward creativity in all aspects of human activity, like producing goods, developing services, sciences, arts, political and social education, and so on.
- We the people choose to work, for the development and maintenance of diversity on all levels of human activities, for the development of complex networks connecting communities, for the support of people and communities whose efforts find a dead-end or fail.
- We the people choose to protect our lives and the lives of the future generations from the concentration of wealth, power, authority and any form of "superiority" left in the hands of social groups or people, by constantly practicing discourse and by staying socially and politically vigilant, by developing social consciousness, and by forming and keeping social rules.
- We the people choose to determine ourselves as the beings that live while searching for the good and fair through the development of our consciousness, rather than the beings looking for the more and the needed through the development of their technologies.
- We the people choose to synchronize our needs and our impulsion, to the capabilities of the environment, which in any case will be the most important heritage to the future generations.

N O T E S

[1] The Athens Democracy had not been a naturally occurring creation of reason, as some present it, since it had been the attempt of a rational adjustment of the ancestral egalitarian rules of the Athens tribes, in the new conditions defined by the productive use of enslaved humans. As one would expect, inside a class society any such attempt is doomed to fail since the belief that there are superior and inferior humans sooner or later effects the forming of the social rules among the "superior" free citizens.

[2] This period, on the Cyclades for example, seems to gradually end 4.300 years ago, when settlements move to naturally or artificially fortified locations, while at the same time powerful authorities are been established from Mesopotamia to Egypt.

[3] The meaning of system here, is not limited to capitalism but expands to any system of dominance as formed through time since the invention of slavery.
Teachings that have imposed this perception of the antagonistic "nature" of human appear since the Homer era. It should be a rational choice of every progressive person to recognize in Iliad and Odyssey, instead of a magnificent work of poetry, a blatant, anti-humane propaganda of a newly established system of authority.
In Iliad, Thersites -exponent of the human rationalism, becomes ridiculed and humiliated by Odysseus, while in Odyssey, it is the one king [άνακτας, ανακτώ - recapture] killing the many deliberately morally depreciated contenders, reversing the egalitarian totemic tradition of the equals and justifying the prior to civilization, animal structure of human societies.

[4] Any formation, and not only authoritarian ones, might become corrupt by the State and its side mechanisms. A possible shield that movements can develop might be the scholastic keeping of the rules of equality, democracy and transparency, along with the agreement on constitutional principles supposed to stay inviolable in any case.

War and coercion: the keystones of modern societies

Normality
It is a hard task questioning the normality of ourselves and the world we live in. We face this difficulty coming both from matters we consider as personal, along with matters we consider as social. Everything though composing our supposedly normality of ourselves and our world, is a product of processes in which, in the limits of our mental abilities, is defined by conscious or unconscious choices, made by us, other persons and groups, along with any kind of coincidences and randomnesses since the "beginning of time". Normality thus, potentially, includes innumerate versions of which some survive in time while new appear constantly.

Diversity
Modern world tends to drastically limit the diversity of the "normalities" since, on one hand, it forms conditions that allow the reticulation of humanity, while, on the other, it is able of defining the pursuits of persons and groups through teachings coming from an amazingly small number of cultural and trading centers.
As we know that developing diversities consist the natural rule of establishing survival and evolution, we can suspect that by limiting it, we might possibly put ourselves in a serious danger.

Time
We are being taught, ever since the Iliad era, that our world is a world of relentless violence, dedicated to simultaneously create magnificent glory and total destruction  This supposedly self proven normality of our world, is established and driven by people who stand above all of us and carry special gifts, even to communicate with supernatural entities, whom their lives are dedicated to command and overrule.
We avoid however to acknowledge that this particular normality, as it has been taught since the Iliad era until now, has only lasted a glimpse of an eye. In all of the rest of the human time, humanity has been evolving seeking the development of reason, empathy, and cooperation, in a constant struggle aiming to reduce antagonism and the destruction it produces.

Knowledge
This minimum glimpse of the eye has been enough for us to,
acknowledge normality in the ridicule of Thersites by Odysseus when he urges his co-warriors to disobedience and peaceful life,
acknowledge normality in the inversion of the totemic tradition in Odyssey where the equals are murdered by the king [άνακτας-recapture],
justify the submission of women to men as reasoned by the invalidation of the Erinnyes in Oresteia, and to,
tolerate the control of knowledge and social innovation by the respective authority as predisposed by the myth of Prometheus.

Fate
We choose to acknowledge as normal the complex system of antagonism separating people to the, more or less, successful ones and to the failed ones. This way, every one sharing a few crumbs of the "success" pie, sees normality in poverty, misery, wars turning cities to ground and people to refugees, as long as this poverty, misery and displacement regards other persons. Most remarkable is the fact that the poor, the miserable and the misplaced seem to conceive their state as a game of fortune instead of the result of a sequence of decisions made by them and other people.

Nature
It is pointless expending ourselves arguing about the potentials of human mentality or the limits of "human nature". It's certain however that, propensity to violence or imperiousness is part of this nature, just like many more often totally contradicting tendencies. The content of human behavior though, is defined by the intelligent choice, evaluating and rejecting the harmful tendencies in behalf of the useful ones, both in the personal and the social frame, while at the same time giving to the personal and the social a convergent path.

War
In the following texts appears an attempt to represent the human world beyond its most common conceptions, along with an attempt to find facts that have formed and are forming it.
In these texts the moment that the weapons are turned to means of production, is presented as the milestone in human History after which humanity is being organized in relations of coercion and submission, which in a more or less obvious manner contain war.

Private autarky against the social bond

Private autarky appears to be a necessary pursuit for almost all modern humans. We match our well-being and classify it accordingly to the magnitude of our self-sufficiency. Our private house, our private transportation, our private nursing for the kids and the elderly, our private medical care, our private education, our private entertainment, our private vacation house, and this list may go on forever.

Private autarky allows us to protect ourselves from the disturbance that other people put on us, meaning, of the disturbance of the continuous and mandatory negotiation and coexistence with other people. Thus, the way for the achievement of either this or that degree of private autarky is the acquisition, accordingly, of the necessary amounts of money.

Private autarky imposes that personal and social relations are adjusted through a network of orders given accordingly to the position each one holds at the financial hierarchy. Having been taught to comprehend any negotiation upon daily or life issues as a tiring matter, we have almost completely attributed the arrangement of such issues to each one’s ability in summing amounts of money that will be spent in order for one to have the right to give orders for obtaining goods and cares.

Inside a social environment of hierarchical transmission of orders, the social bond has lost its practical meaning -that of mutual respect between persons, which respect is constantly reaffirmed through speech. Social bond, in this case, is established upon an abstract context of a desired private autarky and financial prosperity, while requiring the concealment behind the hallucination of a prospering world, of another world that is been destroyed.

From the autarky of the master to the autarky of the worker

Private autarky occurred as an evolutionary consequence of slavery. The human-master no-longer had to negotiate and cooperate since in order to reach his needs he simply had to order the human-slave. On the other hand the human-slave no-longer needed to be creative, inventive and cooperative since he should only do what orders say and behave inside the frame set by his human-master.

Up to the point that slavery was invented, negotiation, exchange and cooperation had been the fields in which human speech and reason developed while -at the same time- developing humanity itself.
The invention of slavery interrupted, or even intervened in a violent way -literally and figuratively- to humanity’s evolution and cultural course. The achievement of cooperation, the abilities it offers and it’s demands at the level of reason, grants ever since its place to a complex system of authority and obedience, private autarky and dependency.

The social state, that -relatively recently- occurred as a result of the continuous revolts of the enslaved workers who found themselves submitted to the capitalists and restricted from any kind of self-sufficiency, is now been demolished; in front of their unsuspecting class inheritors, who -by now- as their primary wary they care to ensure a least equivalent of their masters’ autarky.

Any kind of private autarky of the workers, even of some business people, besides being fictitious since it is depended from the money which is under the control of their masters -the same way like the means of production, the State, the land, the communications, the technologies, science, patents and so on-, constitutes the successful mechanism by which workers become trapped in the system formed to serve their masters.

Private autarky exists -both in theoretical and practical level- at the very opposite of the interests of the subjugated, who as a primary wary should have the formulation of the terms of a social bond serving the creation of an enjoyable public and social environment, based on the tools of negotiation and the use of reason.

From the egalitarian to the class societies

P A R T  1

On one hand, primitive societies, archaic, without civilization, without classes, without authority, without state, without writing, without history or evolution.
On the other hand, developed societies, with civilization, with classes, with authority, with state, with writing, with history and evolution.

Communities with state do not constitute the evolutionary climax of the human societies, nor the egalitarian communities constitute a primary stage of such a linear process. There are no facts revealing an obvious or deterministic evolution from the egalitarian to the class societies. Furthermore, as indicated by the complex and demanding rules and traditions of the egalitarian communities, these communities are not lacking either civilization nor social structure, unless we equate civilization and social structure with the state and the authority.
State and authority though, constitute a type of social structure established upon the coercion that few people put on the most, either by force or other means. If for us coercion does not constitute some important human achievement, or even more if in coercion we recognize the origin of major sufferings burdening people’s lives, this means that we should value as more civilized a society that rejects it.
Such an evaluation matches the aspect of S. Freud according to which the origin of the human civilization stands on the choice of equality and the development of rules-taboos targeting on the minimizing of antagonism and violence in the community, ensuring that no one shall be able to impose on others his will on the sharing of food and mating [S. Freud, Totem and Taboo].
Therefore, the existence of societies with state and authority, does not occur as a demand coming from the people and the civilization, and we should look elsewhere for its origins.

In Society against the state, Pierre Clastres mentions a vast diversity of community organizing types by the American indigenous people, as recorded through the past 500 years. Nomad societies, cultivators, warlike or peaceful, few membered or numerous, without state and authority, or with state and authority. These diversities had been existing irrespective of the technological development level, which had been common to all of these societies.
Therefore, societies with state and authority, are not a product of the development of technologies, since tribes that have achieved similar technologies are in some examples organized in states while in other examples they abhor authority by all means.

Levi Strauss in Anthropology confronts the problems of the modern world, mentions that humanity, by the 99% of its time and while occupying the ¾ of the habitable space, lived while been organized in societies that had developed any possible way to protect themselves from the possible formation of inequalities and authorities, ensuring at the same time balance and sustainability. In this extended time and space of the humanity it would be awkward not to acknowledge the presence of history, social evolution or social innovation.
It could be expected though, even if all facts were available, not to be capable of acknowledging and admiring such procedures while looking through the cultural perception filters of the modern human. Human innovation, however, along with history and evolution, could happen, and have been happening, in many ways fully diverse from the quantitative values which exclusively our perception is treated to perceive.
We might be able, up to a point, to perceive the particular qualities of these values, if we read the facts given by the egalitarian societies, having first eliminated any possible arrogance we carry been the literate “civilized” inheritors of the Athens Democracy and the European Enlightenment.

History, as well as social evolution and innovation, do not exist as products of the societies with state and authority. On the contrary, as described by the fables, social innovation impersonated in Prometheus is chained by State and Violence. This fable stands at the opposite of our perceptions, while implying that, the state and the authority bound the social innovation’s development for their benefit. Meaning that, any history and evolution is produced by this bounded social innovation, is consumed by the vital need of authority and state for strengthening and dominance, feeding the vicious circle of magnification and catastrophe that defines modern societies.

Thus, through a different cultural view, it is the modern societies that do not produce human history and evolution while been trapped to a behavior similar to the one of ant colonies trying to dominate and expel other colonies. Ants, for sure, in order to dominate do not develop technologies and do not increase their financial sizes, but instead are completely depended on the slow evolution of their biological features.
On the other hand, human states and authorities, having in their control the social innovations, develop extracorporeal potentials, all kinds of quantitative sizes, technologies and tools, and this in an amazingly fast and constantly accelerating pace, in order to achieve at the end the same as the ants do: magnification and catastrophe.

Knowing that as a species we excelled through the development of practices that show despise towards enforcement and domination, having followed a course that developed a vast diversity of features and civilizations, we could acknowledge in our present state not simply some diverse version of the human evolution, but instead an unaltered situation, a non-evolution, non-history, and a dead-end that doesn’t match to a human civilization.

The societies we are accustomed to, prosper by destroying the environment, other societies, and parts of themselves, destruction that takes place in absolute ratio to the size of the prosperity they produce. The kind of society that succeeded all over the planet, imposes that any nugget of technology and luxury a human enjoys has its ratio in mizery been imposed to another human living near or far, and to the resources been taken from future generations.
State and authority thus, not only do not add to the quality of the human evolution, but, to the contrary, bound its potentials and lead it to a deadlock quantitative antagonism for growth or destruction, similarly to being themselves, the State and the Authority, creatures fatal and unconscious.

The submission of the social innovation to state and authority is by far the only way for our societies to create history and evolution. This is supported by our knowledge on the culture of Prometheus which existence is revealed to us by the technologically equipped, actively mercantile, and peaceful societies that survived at the islands of East Mediterranean Sea up to 4.500 years ago.
Since social innovation can be evolving free from the bounds of state and authority, we can conclude that it is neither the demand for “progress”, “history” or “evolution” that born and bred its own captors.

The development of the Intellect, contemplation, poetry and philosophical reason, is assigned to the class societies by a simplistic suggestion: since slaves produce enough to feed their masters, masters gain the ability to systematically, or even exclusively, devote themselves to contemplation. For sure, exclusive occupation on a mental activity possibly accelerates some particular mental functions, however, the outcome is most likely to be limited to the specific specialization that itself produces, along with the cultural context of the authoritarian society inside which it is produced.

On the other side, the “uncivilized” “savages” of the egalitarian societies limit their working day to approximately 2 to 4 hours [only in some extreme environments this reaches 7 hours]. They are aware that by increasing the working time one can obtain more goods, but this not only appears to be indifferent to them, but even more, dangerous. The development of the intellect inside an egalitarian social context produces kinds of poetic, philosophical or even scientific reason which we are having difficulties in recognising its value or use, since we are preoccupied by our own special cultural perceptions.
In our societies the polypragmon, inquisitive human of the past, has evolved to a minimum part of a huge machine, while at the same time, the intellectual demands for such a role are limited to minimum.

Authoritarian societies tend to subjugate the intellect to “functionality” and to the social devotion to enlargement-”development”, presenting the coercion of labor as a duty of all humans towards the society. Unfortunately, we are incapable of having knowledge on the intellectual achievements of the “Prometheus civilization”, and even more, on the implementation and the progress of these achievements if this civilization hadn’t ended by the violent manner the myths and the archeological findings suggest. Only then we would have been able to compare the two ways of social evolution.
Thus, we have no clues that suggest that, if the “Prometheus civilization” had the opportunity to evolve in its own manner wouldn’t invent achievements we -perhaps thoughtlessly- attribute to the “civilized”, authoritarian societies.

In any case, the fact that in authoritarian societies people of the intellect are separated from the people of labor, isn’t by far a worthy achievement, especially by the time we consider that this separation, is one more expression of the vicious circle antagonism-enlargement, in which constantly there is a world that flourishes and another world that is been destroyed.
Counter to this, in the egalitarian societies, on one hand, labor doesn’t exist as a consequence of coercion, but instead as a part of a communal activity, doubtlessly interacting in a creative manner with the intellect. On the other hand, the depreciation these people show towards wealth and obtaining goods, leaves to them plenty of free time for the development of qualities of the intellect that we are incapable to perceive.

Human intellect therefore, poetic, philosophical and scientific reason, does not exist as an exclusive privilege of those freed from labor, which they imposed by force on others, neither constitutes a creation or an evolutionary achievement of the authoritarian societies. On the contrary, it is this exact intellect, this evolutionary and cultural achievement that for thousands of years, millions as Strauss says, abolished domination and enforcement, and systematically prevented the development of antagonism and authority inside the communities.

In conclusion, of all the terms using “with” and “without” to distinct the egalitarian societies from the authoritarian, those that more accurately succeed this distinction are: with or without authority, with or without state, with or without classes.

> Thus, there is still a question remaining to be answered:
Which overturn gave birth to the social classes, the state and the authority?

Since humanity’s fundamental achievement has been egalitarianism, which is maintained inalterable in few pushed aside societies, and second most important achievement has been the “Prometheus civilization” with the extended community networks from the Caspian to the Mediterranean Sea, how did the social classes occur?

With the available facts we can attempt a reconstruction of the preconditions, the randomness, and the sequences that birth class societies.
Some possible preconditions:
Community chauvinism, the desire of some specific tribes or persons for war, the productive use of war captives by some tribes, the increment of the population of some tribes and the networks of a large number of a tribe’s communities.[1]

Coercion, “authority” and authority
Pierre Clastres, in Society against the State, as most possible process for the forming of state and authority, suggests the increment of the population and the consequent distance between the leaders and magicians, and the control of the community.
This suggestion, though seemingly convincing, cannot explain the intrusion of coercion in a community. In the longest part of this book Clastres convincingly explains the way “authority” in egalitarian societies exists in a symbolic manner, self-defeating, like been needed only to remind of the importance of its abolishment.
Most important though, is that in egalitarian societies one can’t find any kind of social principle having the right of enforcement. A truly authoritarian principle seems to be inconceivable in egalitarian societies even for the multitudinous ones.
There is however a fact that could prove to be useful to our searching:
During war actions the formerly leader of the community becomes  a real commander gaining the right to impose his will upon the community members.

War
Seemingly, in egalitarian communities, the only chance for a commander to experience what we conceive of this word, from which he is thoroughly constrained in all other instances of the communal life, is during war.
To the environment of violence the egalitarian societies acknowledge and submit its equivalent: authority. However, even the most warlike tribes, do not care for constant warring, even if this is the goal of their leader, and therefore after the completion of war operations he returns, or he is constrained to the usual symbolic duties.
Therefore, it doesn’t seem possible for an ambitious commander, or for a warlike group of youth, to impose to their community conditions of constant war from which constant authority could burst, since communities resist such a possibility.

Slavery
War, for some tribes, had been an important activity, especially for their younger members. The spectre of behaviors and rules related to war is so vast, similar to the ones related to mating. Holding captives had been one of the war activities consequences. For some tribes, war captives constituted titles of honor for their holders. In other tribes, the productive use of war captives had been another version of war activities consequence. The systematization of the productive use of captives, the establishment of slavery, the transmutation of human beings to productive herds, constitutes the peak invention that introduced coercion as the foundation of a new kind of society, the warring society. Tribute, similarly to slavery and coexisting with it, has also been a relevant invention and version of war activities consequence.

Antagonism-growth
The survival of a society that has turn war to a productive procedure and weapons to means of production, depends on its ability to maintain the necessary force in order to compel the subjugated populations. It also depends on its ability to grow its power in order to be able to protect itself or overrule other war societies. In this manner, the natural selection criteria, meaning the promotion of the stronger, intrudes into human societies, extends, and defines ever since our species’ evolution bounding it to the vicious circle that antagonism and growth together form. Ever since, human societies as in one body, seem like sea elephants which if they don’t manage to collect enough body mass they are in danger of been excluded from mating.

Constant war
The constant war in which a society transformed to an antagonistic beast fed by human flesh is bounded to, creates the need for leadership and authority to its interior. The coercion that such a society imposes to its subjugates, inevitably slips into the relations of its own members, since, on the one hand, violence is from this point on presented and acknowledged as a rule for social relations, while, on the other hand, authority and coercion [as military discipline] become the most effective tools in carrying out a mandatory and constant war.

> Composing the elements

Rulers and vassals: two societies in one
We could state that, our societies, in unknown times and places organized themselves in classes of rulers and vassals, under the precondition that the first, both choose and have the ability to, compel the second. This statement, however, suggests that coercion has been magically assimilated by societies during their evolution towards a completion defined by the existence of classes, authority and state.

A social formation coming from war and enslavement shouldn’t be acknowledged as a single society but more as a social compound.
The ruling society during the first stages of their invention most likely preserve their totemic traditions, their marital and behavioral habits, even those that prevent the community principals transform to authoritarian. At the same time, as far as the ruling society concerns, the face of the subjugated to slavery or tribute, does not exist, vassals exist only as objects, as human herds.
The vassal societies, depending on the practices of the rulers, experience various amounts of catastrophe, in some cases facing complete erasure while in others, continuous exploitation. In some cases they preserve their traditions, even partly, while in other cases they are oppressed by all means of their human substance.

What we acknowledge as a single community constituted by rulers and vassals, is an arbitrary perception, based on the teaching that inside a society some may live while compelling and others while been compelled. What an amazing “progress” for humanity, knowing that for the “primitives”, the fundamental community rule is that coercion is not acceptable!

None of our modern “developed” societies constitutes a single community. Actually, each one of our societies consists of a total of communities constantly warring one another. Inside each one of our states, the dominant community, in the distant times imposed its will by force upon societies that became vassal, and maintains its authority by the exact same means: warring constantly with the vassal communities, and warring frequently with other rival states. Each of these dominant communities, one way or another, aims at its prosperity through the destruction of others.

Such an example is mentioned by Yuval Harari in Sapiens related to the social castes, the social restrictions and the social myths imposed by the conquering intruders in the Indian peninsula 3.000 years ago, in order to secure their longevity. This kind of social myths teach the “truth” of the submission of the “lower” castes, to the “superior” ones, presenting the total of these communities as a single society divided to classes by divine or natural laws.

Regardless of the amount of the changes, transformations, aggregations, reclassifications, and rebirths our societies carry behind them, the core of their functioning stands upon the invention of some humans that appeared sometime after the, so called, agricultural revolution: the use of weapons and war as means of production, and the transmutation of the peaceful -or less capable in war people- to human herds for exploitation.

The coincidence under which this invention occurred, probably relates to multiple factors, such as, the culture of the one or of the other tribe, the amount of produced surplus by one or the other tribe, the personality of specific people, and also randomness. In any case, whenever this invention dominated some area, thenceforth it imposed chain reactions. The consequences of these reactions relate mostly to the war antagonism introduced in these areas, which followingly demands the effective strengthening against rivals. If this strengthening proves to be inadequate, then, the prospects are either enslavement, or self-displacement and reproduction of this invention in other areas.

Through such an interpretation, the relocation of the greek tribes during the antiquity, towards the present area of Greece, and the enslavement of earlier habitats, might had been mandatory by previous forced displacement from their origins. While moving West they were carrying with them the knowledge of slavery and the new use of weapons. Followingly this knowledge was exported through colonization further towards the West, where the Etruscans and later on the Romans, proved to be the ideal successors.

It’s inappropriate to describe our societies as class societies, since their state does not relate to an inherent stratification coming from the development of each community. Even if anthropologists mention for some egalitarian communities the existence of stratifications, the concepts of coercion and violence, of the destruction of some for the benefit of others, had been, not simply unknown but more correctly, expelled by the cultural notion until one tribe enslaved another.

Therefore, the unique feature of our societies, that appears to be unchanged since its birth, is not simply the existence of classes, but instead the constant war and the continuous coercion that each dominant society acts against its vassals. Each of our complex societies consists of the society of those who compel and the society of those who are been compelled, the society of those who control the weapons as means of production and the society of those who are forced by those who control the weapons.

The existence of stratifications, castes and classes inside both the dominant and vassal communities, confuses the overall picture and creates the illusion of a single community constituted by classes. This, however, is completely misleading since, for humans, what forms a single society is the general avoidance of violence and coercion, especially the violence and coercion coming from the few towards the most. The very existence of this violence and coercion proves that we are totally mistaken considering our societies as single societies, and, even worse, for as long this illusion lasts, the vassals cannot develop the means to escape the narratives of their rulers. The narratives coming from the rulers, have been proven to be equally effective as their weapons, which however in any case they do not hesitate to use whenever their narratives prove to be insufficient.

Our societies are not single but complex, constituted by war communities forcing peaceful communities to live as their productive herds, achieving the well being of the first through the destruction of the second. Societies, regardless the fact that they might seemingly behave as beings themselves, they are still consisted of human beings that choose to behave in one or the other manner. Thus warring and ravenous societies are led by dominating and ravenous persons, while the peaceful ones by cooperative and peaceful persons. For us humans, one can not measure the degree that the tendencies towards rapacity or cooperativity constitute biological or cultural features. In any case though, human intellect, while having the ability of self-reforming, allows these tendencies to be modified even to their complete opposite.

P A R T  4

> Conclusions

  • Each “Class” society is a complex society led by one dominant community been in constant war with its vassals.
  • Every such dominant society develops mechanisms and behaviors similar to a being whose survivour depends on the constant strengthening against other similar “beings”.
  • Violence, war and coercion are fundamental choices of people that lead to the formation of the complex societies.
  • The prosperity that the choice of violence, war, and coercion, grants to the rulers, balances by their bound to a constant war against their vassals and their rivals.
  • The prosperity that the rulers grant themselves with, has an absolute equivalent in the catastrophe that their tributaries experience.
  • Having passed at least 4.000 years since the weapons and war were used for the first time as means of production, the clear picture of a complex society consisted of the ruling society and the vassal societies, has turned so complicated and purposely hidden by the rulers’ narratives, without however diverging the least from its fundamental values which are violence, war and coercion.

> Consequences

Besides the obvious catastrophe that dominants cause to their vassals, and frequently to themselves since inevitably some will be proved weak inside the competing arena they themselves form, some of the occurring consequences affect the whole of humanity and its evolution.
  • The ability of dominant communities to maintain depends on their ability to strengthen and grow. Mandatory growth through the use of the social innovation that rulers control, has formed a universal social environment that sooner or later will have to face the exhaustion of the natural resources.
  • In many occasions, boundaries set by the environment can be exceeded by the use of science and technologies that the rulers control, with unknown, however, consequences for both dominants and vassals.
  • The evolution of human species shows contradictions since, regardless that, at least for the dominants, average age seems to have increased, on the other hand the brain volume of humans seems to have decreased through the last 10.000 years. Throughout all these years the most human of all our features, the ability to use language in order to form cooperative networks, has been replaced by a simple mechanism of receiving and executing orders.

> Opportunities

As Harari mentions in Sapiens, human is a being that moved from the middle of the food chain to the top, without having the time to readjust to this change. Humans are now stronger than lions but continue to behave like terrified chimps, and this makes us extremely dangerous. Respectively, neither lions, nor chimps, nor any other being didn’t have the time to readjust to this sudden move of the humans from the middle of the food chain to its top.

  • Through the interscientific perception of the universe we have the means to comprehend our world, ourselves, our past, and the existing potentials is forming our future. In a great amount, as humans we are what we teach ourselves to be, while at the same time, we can become what we choose to become.
  • It is worthless to defend hypothetical achievements of people and societies in case that survivour through war had not prevailed. At the same time though, it is completely arbitrary to reject the idea that some egalitarian societies would find the way to offer wonderful achievements to people, while leading our societies to totally diverse directions. In any case, from where we now stand, we can work for the liberation of Prometheus, meaning the liberation of the social innovation from the bounds put by the dominant societies, and the rejection of coercion as a way of coexisting, developing at the same time our abilities in cooperation and mutual understanding.

[1] As Strauss mentioned in Anthropology confronts the problems of the world, the word race is not accurate for describing an autonomous community and should be used in a wider context since, genetic factor falls behind the cultural factor as far as defining the marital rules and the genetic aggregations.

... However, we find it hard to accept that king Agamemnon, or any other hero of the Iliad, while behaving as a dominant can be a decorated and armed, standing chimpanzee, or any other decorated and "stately" animal.
Accordingly though to what we've mentioned up to now, we oppose this idea not because it is not true, but because, if we accept that it is true the whole system of perceptions built through centuries of domination systems shall collapse. And then, if this reality reveals to us, we will start to see as standing chimpanzees decorated with ornaments, many more of the dominants and important ones through centuries,  those of who we have been taught to acknowledge as superior, to admire them, applaud, praise, and to follow the urge to be like them, if we haven't already. Especially now that the electronic media present live to us countless figures of this kind, both men and women, trying the most to amaze as.
This is exactly one of the goals of this book: to contribute to the collapse of such perceptions of superiority, that for thousands of years we're been taught by all these, decorated or not, dominants and officials of the domination systems. …

Homer’s epics have been teaching for 3.000 years that the civilization of war is the only possible condition for the human societies. The importance of the king and authority is presented in these epics in a consummate and glorifying manner.
Studying the history of the Greek city-states, the similarities and the differences, we may acknowledge in great amount of detail the struggle inside them to maintain the egalitarian rules that were carried deeply in their traditions.

The story of Athens shows a great interest since, when the war period for the survival of the tribe ended by the establishment in the specific land area, the kingdom ended and there were continuous attempts to bring back egalitarian rules in social relations. Attempts doomed, however, since their society would be ever since bounded to war with the communities of its enslaved and vassals. Their society was also bounded to constantly pursuing strength to successfully confront its rivals. The endup is known and, regardless the dominant narratives that blind and mislead us, it is always the same: catastrophe.
